Waiver of Ignition Interlock Device

Dekalb County courts are tough on DUI offenders.  With each offense the statutory penalties devised by the Georgia legislature increase.  DeKalb County prosecuting lawyers seek jail time and long and detailed (not to mention expensive) probation sentences for those facing DUI charges.  Sometimes, especially for repeat offenders, a condition of probation is the installation of an ignition interlock device in the persons vehicle.

An ignition interlock is a small device that the driver needs to breathe into in order for the car to start.  In most DeKalb County cases when an ignition interlock is a mandatory part of the probationers sentence, the interlock is required during a six month period following a complete one year suspension of driving privileges.  The interlock detects the drivers blood alcohol and if there is a detectable amount of alcohol, usually a .04 or higher, then the car will not start.

A problem that those on probation for DUI in DeKalb County sometimes face is when they move from the state of Georgia.  As the ignition interlock is specific to Georgia, and you cannot get your Georgia driving privileges reinstated until after 6 successful months with the interlock, an interlock device waiver needs to be obtained in order to get driving privileges restored.  DeKalb DUI lawyer Richard Lawson can help you navigate this complicated maze.  Call Mr. Lawson today for a free consultation.
